Yeah, you thought of something dirty when you saw this title.............shame on you. Actually, this is a small, naturally made hole in the volcanic rock along the ironshore that pushes the through with tremendous force every time a wave hits. It's quite fun (and loud!!) to sit there and watch. Just a little geology for all those interested:
Cayman Island Geology
The Cayman Islands are made up of a submarine mountain range called The Cayman Ridge, which formed ver time by the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates bashing against one another. The Cayman Ridge is around 250 kilometers wide and reaches depths of 5000 meters. The Caymans have a granodiorite base, followed by a cap of basalt. The uppermost layer of the Caymans is composed mostly of living organisms (corals, algae, and shells) and were laid down during sea level changes over the past 30 million years. Due to the porous nature of the limestones that are present on the Caymans Islands along with the absence of much relief of any kind, all of the Caymans lack rivers or streams. This lack of sediment runoff due to erosion of topsoil has created extremely clear waters offshore of the Caymans.
Hi Dave,
ReplyDeleteWaaaaas up? Did you originally have a set time-line plan as far as length of stay with your new job in Grand Cayman? It is almost April now;have you seen Yetty, Peter and Archie either there or back home? I hope you have acclimated to "island life" but knowing you, I am sure this was not an issue. Where are you living down there(hotel, house, highrise penthouse condo w/1800 s.f. rap-around balcony facing ocean & indoor jaccuzi w/pop-up 55" plasma, or maybe sleeping under your desk at work)?
